Avoid creating waste by buying things that are only reusable or can be recycled is a safer way to reduce it.
If you need to buy anything, look for recycled items.
Instead of making the trash go to the dump, look for opportunities to recycle everything.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle are terms that all of us are familiar with. You can save the environment by reducing the amount of packaged goods you buy, recycle what you can, and reusing what you can. The most popular recyclable materials are glass, aluminium, plastic, cardboard, and paper.
Australia generates approximately two tons of waste per year. This waste is a combination of domestic and industrial waste produced by items we purchase or use. Reducing, reusing, and recycling will reduce waste by half of it.
Current disposal practices endanger our health, wellbeing, and the environment, as well as adding to society’s indirect costs. The majority of commercial, industrial, and domestic waste is now disposed of in landfills. This form of waste treatment has the potential to contaminate groundwater, rivers, streams, and lakes.
Also, as waste is burnt, poisonous chemicals are released into the air, and chemical residues in the form of ash are left behind. In some manner or another, these toxic waste byproducts make their way into humans and animals.
Go paperless. Reduce using paper bags, ask for an e-receipt instead of a paper receipt, ask for digital magazines and newspapers, avoid using notepads for memos and write your memos down on your mobile.
Use reusable cloth shopping bags instead of using plastic bags that you are going to throw away eventually. Avoid buying plastic straws and use metallic straws so that you can reuse them multiple times.
Whenever possible, avoid using coffee cups, plastic utensils, and napkins that can be used only a single time. Some coffee shops give you a discount if you bring your own cup.
Bring a washable spoon, forks, plate, mug, and cup, at work instead of using the disposable ones.
Instead of buying a water bottle from a shop, carry your own reusable water bottle everywhere with you.
Almost any kind of metal can be recycled! Vehicle metal, metal appliances, keys, foil, metal lids, metal tools, and aluminium cans.
Note that steel and aluminium can be recycled again and again!
Paper and cardboard can be recycled into many things, like copy pages, new cardboards, boxes, and cartons.
Timber, grass clippings, woodchips, shrub and yard clippings, leaves, branches, bark wood, etc., can be recycled into organic mulches and agriculture.
Concrete material is sorted, shredded, and recycled into gravel, pavement bedding, and products that are mixed into making roads.
Instead of tossing out discarded plastic items, send them to a recycling center where they can be melted down into making other materials like clothes, carpets, sleeping bags, etc. See the recycling symbol at the bottom of the plastic products.
Glass items are sorted by color, then washed to remove any impurities. After that, they are crushed, melted, and molded into new glass products.
